Community Grants for ice rinks in London, Ontario

1 minute

This topic popped up when I was doing a walk-n-talk with neighbours of the Ballymote Ave area, just north of Sunningdale Rd. There have been some very committed parents who’ve been making and maintaining skating rinks in Forest Hill Park for years but faced some challenges recently. So, I’ll make sure to keep in contact with them to make that happen for this upcoming season (if it’s another good, cold winter)! Here’s some info for when it comes time, though!

There’s a Managed Ice Rink Program in London

Overall, the City of London’s Neighbourhood-Managed Ice Rink Program provides in-kind support for residents to create, maintain, and operate outdoor skating rinks in local parks from January to March.

For the 2026/2027 season, the application process is expected to open in Fall 2026.

Program Details & Support

  • Volunteers Needed: A minimum of six dedicated volunteers are required to maintain the rink.
  • City Assistance: The city provides water access, hoses, nozzles, shovels, and garbage bins.
  • Financial Assistance: Up to $400 per season can be provided for utilities.
  • Location: Rinks are installed in public parks; natural ice depends on cold temperatures.
  • Responsibilities: Volunteers handle daily maintenance and sign the required liability documentation

Application Process

  1. Form a Group: Find at least 5 other neighbours to help.
  2. Identify a Site: Ensure it is a flat, suitable area in a park.
  3. Apply Online: Applications are managed through the city’s neighbourhood-managed ice rinks page.
  4. Orientation: Approved volunteers attend a mandatory orientation meeting.
